Vertical caving is one of the youngest of the vertical sports, having begun as recently as the 1950‘s. It differs significantly from climbing in that the caver is more apt to be found rigging, descending, and ascending on the rope itself rather than on landforms and natural features. Vertical cavers rappel and ascend long distances (several hundred feet) and in adverse conditions such as darkness and wetness.
